LeadWest is the regional organisation for Melbourne’s west. LeadWest is focused on advocacy for the region. We are a nonpartisan and not-for-profit, membership-based organisation.
Our objective is to foster and undertake actions that will support sustainable growth and development of the region. To this end, LeadWest aims to build on the existing social, economic and environmental capacity of the region and to plan and create a sustainable future for the well being of the communities of the region.
LeadWest understands the factors that contribute to a strong regional economy and works to generate improvements in five key determinants of long-term regional economic development:
Human capital, particularly education and skills
Sustainable communities (economically, environmentally and socially)
Access to international, national and regional markets
Comparative advantage and business competitiveness
Effective cross-sectoral and intergovernmental partnerships (including through place-based approaches) and integrated regional planning
LeadWest is constituted as a company limited by guarantee without share capital. Any organisation with operations in the region may apply for membership.
LeadWest’s membership includes all six local governments in Melbourne’s west and they are joined by major companies and other organisations, each with substantial operations or interests that are based in Melbourne’s west.
LeadWest also has a growing number of Affiliates, primarly not-for-profit organisations and each playing a significant role in our region.
LeadWest is governed by a Board of Directors comprising six local government representatives (one each from the cities of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham), four elected by the members and an independent chairperson.
Mr Barry Harvey AM is LeadWest’s current independent chairperson.
